Mounting Money Issues for Rand Community Center

RAND, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An empty computer room and hallways are evidence of the under-used Rand Community Center. So much so that they are facing a financial fiasco.

"It's been a struggle," Rev. Robert Hairston, President of the Rand Community Center said.

"I think it's something we're very sensitive of the future of what they're doing up there and I don't know what's going on there but I would say it's a very sensitive position," Hoppy Shores of the Kanawha County Commission said.

The center makes money through their in-house thrift store, donations and hot dog sales, but it’s not enough to stay afloat.

"I don't think our power would be shut off nowhere soon but it could in the future," Hairston said.

More than $1,400 was owed to Mountaineer Gas that the Kanawha County Commission ended up paying because the Rand Community Center only has roughly $80 in their checking account.

"They can't agree on things, they're desperate for money, they can't even pay the gas bill -- we're going to have to deal with that," Kent Carper, president of the Kanawha County Commission said.

The county commission doesn’t want to see the Rand Community Center returning over and over again needing more money.

"They have vacant property up there and, you know, that's right on the river -- and if they could rent that property they would have no more problems with paying their bills."

But until they can fill those vacancies, hard times could continue to mount for the non-profit.

The Rand Community Center accepts individual and business donations, so if you’d like to help you can contact the center.
