LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A mudslide has left people with no way out of their neighborhood for the second time in just over a week.

Neighbors in the Lyburn area said the mudslides are caused by road construction on top of a mountain, where cut trees have caused dirt to come loose.

“It’s a mess,” Earl Browning said. “You can’t go that way, you got it blocked. You can’t go this way.”

Browning’s 83-year-old brother is receiving dialysis treatments. When the mudslide happened last week, his brother wasn’t able to get to his scheduled treatment because the road was closed off for hours.

“It’s heartbreaking that they could leave a neighborhood of people to just sit here and have to wait, especially with something that serious going on,” Debbie Browning said.

When she and her neighbors tried to contact the state about getting the mudslide fixed, they said the state told them it was the responsibility of the construction company, Vecellio and Grogan.

“To get a comment that it wasn’t the state’s problem to clean it up and you’ve got a person literally dying in front of you, it’s not a good thing to have to deal with,” Debbie Browning said.

Vecellio and Grogan told that they had no comment because they are contracted by the state of West Virginia.

“You feel like a trapped rat,” Tommy Burress said as he waited to go down a stretch of road where flaggers were stopping people for up to 30 minutes at a time.

Burress said he and his neighbors have had to miss days of work, since only way in and out of their neighborhood is blocked.

“You lose money,” Burress said. “Been a lot of them down here who lose money on jobs.”

Earl Browning said while this isn’t the first time it’s happened, he looks forward to the road being fixed.

“It’s going to be inconvenient until they get it done,” Browning said. has contacted the state Division of Highways to ask about the project or get an update on its expected completion but has not heard back.
