BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The northbound lanes of Interstate 77 have reopened at the scene of a rock slide that happened last week at mile-marker three, the West Virginia Department of Transportation announced Wednesday evening.

Traffic had been detoured several days onto U.S. 460 as crews cleaned up the debris.

The rock slide occurred along a stretch of I-77 located in southern West Virginia near the Virginia border.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation says at this time they do no envision the lanes being open before Wednesday.

While progress is being made, the wet and wintry conditions are making an already difficult job even harder to complete. Crews will only be working during the daylight hours because night work has been deemed too unsafe

Heavy equipment is being used to push any loose hanging rock down the slope in order to keep more slides from happening.

Crews are also hauling rock and debris to a dump site along the highway

Traffic is being rerouted onto U.S. 460 in Princeton, where the highway reconnects with the interstate.

WVDOH crews are continuing to direct traffic along the detour route (US 460), with flaggers at every signaled intersection.

The slide occurred Wednesday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

The Division of Highways said Thursday that the rock slide must be stabilized first. A contractor is using heavy equipment to push more rock and debris down the slope. Once that happens, workers will also begin to clean up some of the debris and haul it away.

Concrete barriers have been placed in the slow lane of I-77 to contain the debris.

Drivers will continue to be routed to the Detour at Exit 1 to US 460 and then can reenter the Interstate in Princeton at Exit 9.

The southbound lanes remain open.

District manager Tom Camden says the slide and the hillside are unstable. Crews are trying to determine to safest way to clean up the slide.
