ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man from Gallipolis, convicted of raping an Ohio University student, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Last month, a jury in Athens County found Levi D. Canterbury, 23, guilty of two counts of first-degree rape.

Thursday, Canterbury was sentenced in Athens County Common Pleas Court.

Prospectors say as part of the sentence Canterbury was given credit for time served. He was also ordered to pay $8,450 in restitution along with a $10,000 fine.

Canterbury is also required to register as a sex offender when he is released from prison.

Prosecutors say that on Sept. 10, 2011, at about 3 a.m., Canterbury picked up the victim who was intoxicated and walking home alone. He then took the victim to a parking lot and forcibly raped her, prosecutors said.

In October 2011, Canterbury was arrested at Fort Bliss, Texas, where he was member of the National Guard

UPDATE 7/23/13
ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The trial is underway for a young man charged with raping an Ohio University student.

Levi Canterbury, 22, of Gallipolis, is charged with two counts of rape in Athens County.

Investigators say he picked up an intoxicated female OU student in September 2011, took her to a parking lot and raped her, then dropped her off near campus.

The trial began Monday with opening arguments from the prosecution and defense.

The prosecution says DNA evidence proves Canterbury is guilty of rape.

The defense says his client was a National Guard member who showed concern for the welfare of an intoxicated female who was walking along the road without pants on.

The prosecution and defense painted two different pictures of what happened that night.

The prosecution says the young woman was relieved to have a ride until Canterbury put his hand on her leg, stopped in a parking lot and raped her.

Both the prosecution and defense say Canterbury called 911 after he dropped the young woman off to tell them about the intoxicated woman.

The defense says if Canterbury raped her, he would not have called 911.

According to opening arguments, the woman did not have a rape kit conducted when she went to the hospital the day after the alleged rape.

The prosecution says Canterbury's DNA was found on the victim's clothing.

The trial continues Tuesday.

The Athens County Prosecutor's Office says they expect the trial to last at least through the week.
