CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Office of Nutrition Services has announced new eligibility guidelines for the WIC program.

The new guidelines indicate that a family of four can earn $44,123 and still qualify for WIC benefits.

This amounts to a $555 increase from 2013 and will allow more West Virginia families to enroll in the program.

"Our goal is to provide nutritional services and information that help keep West Virginia families healthy," said Dr. Letitia Tierney, State Health Officer and Commissioner for Public Health. "Currently, West Virginia WIC serves nearly 46,000 mothers and young children monthly. With the expanded income guidelines, we can serve more families."

West Virginia WIC serves 70% of all babies born in the state.

Families enrolled in the program receive nutrition education, breastfeeding education, nutritious foods, and access to maternal, prenatal and pediatric healthcare services that may otherwise be unavailable.

Below are the new guidelines:

For a household size of one, the gross weekly income is $416, gross monthly income of $1,800 and gross yearly income of $21,590.

For a household size of two, the gross weekly income is $560, gross monthly income of $2,426, and gross yearly income of $29,101.

For a household size of three, the gross weekly income is $705, gross monthly income is $3,051, and gross yearly income is $36,612.

For a household size of four, the gross weekly income is $848, gross monthly income is $3,677, and gross yearly income of $44,123.

For each additional family member, add $145 per week, $626 per month, and $7,511 per year.

The Office of Nutrition Services reports an additional 5,000 West Virginians could be served under the expanded WIC guidelines. Eligibility projections indicate as many as 50,733 residents qualify for the program. Fathers, mothers, grandparents, foster parents or any legal guardian of a child under five may apply.
