Ohio Police Have Tool to Help Catch Car Break-In Suspects
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- This time of year, it seems there's a spike in crime, as the calendar counts down to the holidays.
Carolyn Berlin of Huntington had no idea she'd be caught in the Christmas crime blitz.
"I came out and noticed my car door was open," Berlin said. "They took the GPS and a Christmas present out of the trunk."
In Ohio, the state's top law enforcement agency has a tool to target crime. Agents with the Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) have several "bait cars" to assist in car break-in investigations.
The cars are wired with several cameras, both inside and outside, that have motion senors. When someone gets near the vehicle, it sends a live feed to local police.
Berlin hopes her break-in will urge other people in pay close attention to their vehicles.
"If you're gonna park with stuff in the car, park in a well-lit area," she said. "Just be aware of your surroundings and be careful."
