Ohio State Senator Introduces Anti-Gun Control Legislation

Posted: Thu 7:46 PM, Feb 14, 2013

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Rebecca Scott is a proud gun owner. She's also proud to be from Ohio because of its gun friendly laws.

“We have a lot of people that seek Ohio for their gun laws,” Scott said. “I have people from California that come in and say, oh my gosh, this is awesome... I can have this! And without all the extra regulations or zoning. And that makes Ohio a very friendly state.”

Because of that, she wasn't all together surprised to learn a bill has been introduced into the Ohio Senate, aimed at keeping the president's plan for gun control out.

“It is a relief to know that our senators and our congressmen are listening to us,” Scott said. “And to know that they're onboard and just as gun friendly as we hope and pray they are.”

Rebecca owns lock stock and barrel gun shop in Portsmouth. She says many of her customers have been writing legislators. Kris Jordan-- the author of senate bill 36-- says he heard voters cries.

“People just see their freedoms getting stolen daily out of all the actions in Washington,” Jordan said. “And let me just say... This is the day that our founding fathers warned us about. And the actions we see coming out of Washington are the reason our founding fathers gave us the bill of rights.”

But not everyone sees gun control as a violation of those rights. Donye Smith is a student at Shawnee State. He's concerned about gun violence.

“Here it's not that big of a problem but you have to think all over the state it might be a bigger problem,” Smith said.

He's from Dayton, where he says guns are a bigger issue. He wants to see more laws on the books.

“Two weeks ago my friend got shot in the chest,” Smith said. “So that's a prime example. You don't control guns on the streets, they're going to come in the schools, come in the churches, gonna mess with the whole communities. Just for the better off of the community.”

Scott, on the other hand, says responsible gun owners shouldn't be limited because of the actions of a few.

“You know, I don't need a car that goes a hundred twenty miles an hour,” Scott said. “Because the speed limit isn't that high. But it's there if I have to.”

Specifically, this bill would prohibit firearms from being seized because of federal law, and also prevent the creation of a federal firearms registry in Ohio.

Basically-- putting a stop to any federal gun control laws not already on the books.
