UPDATE 6/8/14 @ 11:04 p.m.
MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Streaks have become far too common on Route 35; skid marks stretching across lanes of traffic, detailing the destruction.

"Four to five miles we've had probably six fatalities," said Jim McCausland, who lives on Route 35.

Before Sunday, that number was one less.

Around 11:30 in the morning, a car and motorcycle collided, leaving one dead and another air-lifted with serious injuries.

McCausland has lived along Route 35 his entire life. Every day he hops in his truck, only to face the challenge of the drive ahead.

"Everybody thinks it's a drag strip," said McCausland. "They race down here at 70 miles per hour."

Further up the road lives McCausland's cousin, Angela. She hasn't driven in several years, but the dangers will always haunt her.

"March the First, 1978," stated Angela McCausland.

That unforgettable date, a Wednesday, was when her son was killed on Route 35.

"Someone had not done things properly and hit him, and there was no escape," said Angela McCausland.

Both Jim and Angela expect patrols to increase for a week or two, which might curb the problem for a while. However, they say the real fix must come from drivers putting lives ahead of time.

"They're always in a hurry," said Angela McCausland. "Why? Because they don't get up in time to go someplace or what the reason is? But it just doesn't make good sense."

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The names of the victims has not yet been released.
