UPDATE: Meigs County Shooting Case to be Presented to Grand Jury

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A shooting case in Meigs County will be presented to the prosecutor's office to determine if charges will be filed.

Investigators say Robert Burns, 69, shot his stepson William "Eddie" Cleveland, 49, Wednesday at a home on Bridge Ridge Road.

The victim's mother and suspect's wife, Carol Burns, tells WSAZ.com the shooting happened after an argument that began Tuesday and continued Wednesday.

Major Scott Trussell with the Meigs County Sheriff's Office tells WSAZ.com Cleveland was shot in the head and stomach with a small-caliber pistol.

Burns was taken into custody and questioned Tuesday. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, Burns was released from custody Wednesday evening. No charges have been filed at this time.

The Sheriff's Office says the case will be presented to the grand jury to determine if charges will be filed.

Cleveland underwent surgery Wednesday. He is currently in stable condition at St. Mary's Medical Center.

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – A man is in custody and his stepson is in critical condition after a shooting in Meigs County Wednesday morning.

The victim’s mother and suspect’s wife, Carol Burns, said the shooting happened after an argument that began Tuesday and continued Wednesday morning.

The shooting was reported about 9:30 a.m. at a house on Briar Ridge Road in the Langsville area of Meigs County.

Burns said her son, William “Eddie” Cleveland, 49, came into the house from the camper behind the home where he lives and began to argue with his stepfather, Robert Burns, 69.

"My husband hit him [Cleveland] with the gun in the head, I figure to knock him out,” Carol Burns said. “Then he [Cleveland] knocked him [Burns] back into the corner and when he come up, Eddie [Cleveland] was still fighting him and he [Burns] shot."

Meigs County Sheriff’s Deputies said Cleveland was taken by helicopter to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington for surgery.

Major Scott Trussell tells WSAZ.com Cleveland was shot in the head and stomach with a small-caliber pistol.

Carol Burns told WSAZ.com Wednesday afternoon that Cleveland was in critical condition following that surgery.

Deputies confirmed Burns was in custody and said the county prosecutor would look at the evidence from the investigation to determine whether he would face any charges.

One family member tells WSAZ.com Cleveland has had issues with alcoholism in the past, and Carol Burns said she believes her son is mentally unstable.

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – A man is in custody and his stepson in critical condition following a shooting in Meigs County Wednesday morning.

The shooting was reported about 9:30 a.m. at a residence in 31000 block of Briar Ridge Road in the Langsville area.

Robert Burns, 69, is the suspect in the shooting, according to his wife, Carol Burns.

She also tells WSAZ.com that her son, William “Eddie” Cleveland, 49, was shot, and is in critical condition following surgery at St. Mary's Medical Center.

Carol Burns also says the shooting followed an argument that began Tuesday and continued Wednesday morning. She says her son was shot twice.

Sheriff Keith Wood confirms Burns is in custody. There is no word on potential charges.

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Meigs County Sheriff's Office is on scene of a shooting.

The shooting was reported about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday along Briar Ridge Road in the Langsville area.

Sheriff Keith Wood tells WSAZ.com one person was shot. They were flown to St. Mary's Medical Center. No word on their condition.

He also says a suspect is in custody.

We're told a father and son are the suspect and victim.

No other information is being released at this time.
