UPDATE 4/30/13
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charges are pending against two people who police say started a fight that ended with them being stabbed.

The stabbing happened about 1:30 Monday afternoon in the 900-block of 5th Avenue.

Police say James Kerlavage and Betty Christian were walking down 5th Avenue with a group of people.

Witnesses tell WSAZ.com that the group had open containers of alcohol. They say that Harold Howell, the assistant manager of an apartment complex in the area, told the group they were not allowed to have the open containers in the entryway of the complex.

Police say Howell also told them that they were banned from the complex.

Witnesses say that's when Kerlavage and Christian started hitting Howell, knocking him to the ground, and he fought back.

"There was four more people sitting on his legs. That's when [he] pulled the knife out, trying to defend himself, 'cause they was bloodying him up and everything. Yes, he did stab the girl in the hand and the guy in the stomach, but he was defending himself," said Gregory Baker, who witnessed the incident.

James Kerlavage and Betty Christian were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say charges are pending against them.

Another witness at the scene says this is all a sign of the times.

"There's just something about our younger generation these days. They just don't have no respect for people like us, that are handicapped or disabled," Gary Carney said.

At this time, Huntington Police tell WSAZ.com they do not expect to file charges against Howell.
