UPDATE 7/18/13 @ 9:40 a.m.
PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Investigators are still trying to determine what the chemicals were that a man was carrying in his pocket, that led to a Walmart being evacauated and shut down.

The incident happened on July 12 around 10:45 a.m. at the Paintsville Walmart.

Paintsville Police say a man had chemicals in a plastic bottle. The chemicals got on his clothes. Police tell WSAZ.com the chemicals ate at his clothes like acid would.

At this time, they do not know what the chemicals were, but say it was not a meth lab.

The chemicals have been sent to a lab for testing. It could be a week before they get the results.

Once they find out what the chemicals are, they will determine if charges will be filed.

Police tell WSAZ.com that the man received some burn rashes on his body where the chemicals contacted his skin.

No one else was injured.

ORIGINAL STORY 7/12/13 @ 5:57 p.m.
PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Police say chemicals used to make meth reacted in a man’s pocket Friday inside Wal-Mart in Paintsville, which led to the store being evacuated and shut down for three hours.

Customers, workers and managers had to stay outside starting at 10:45 a.m. Friday. Ashley Hardie, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart, said it was because of a chemical spill and they asked everyone inside to leave out of an “abundance of caution.”

The store reopened around 1:45 p.m. after police and fire departments cleared the scene and cleaned up the store.

One customer said she was almost done shopping when she was told she would have to leave the store. Everyone in charge, she said, was very calm and orderly about the situation.

There was no word on any injuries.
