Panel Named to Decide on Suspension of Athens County Sheriff

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A three-judge panel has been named to determine if Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly should be suspended from office..

Sheriff Kelly, 63, was indicted last month by the Ohio Attorney General's Office on 25 counts including three counts of fourth-degree theft in office, 10 counts of fifth-degree theft in office, four counts of theft, one count of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, one count of third-degree money laundering, one count of third-degree tampering with evidence, one count of third-degree perjury, failure to keep a cashbook, one count misdemeanor obstructing official business, and one count of misdemeanor dereliction of duty.

According to records filed with the Ohio Supreme Court, on Feb. 4, Attorney General Mike DeWine requested a special commission of three retired judges to consider the suspension of Sheriff Kelly from Public Office in relation to the charges.

Wednesday, Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor appointed Retired Judge Neal Bronson, Retired Judge Jennifer Sargus, and Retired Judge John Bender to the panel.
