UPDATE 11/24/12 @ 5:45 p.m.
KANAWHA COUNTY, W. Va. (WSAZ) – A pastor is thankful to be alive after he and his wife returned to their home in Marmet never to imagine what and who they would find.

Pastor Charles Watson noticed something wasn’t right. As he walked upstairs he told police he was hit across the face by an intruder with a long wooden club

Police say that intruder was Charles Galloway, 20, of Charleston, who Watson had helped in the past.

"Well I walked over to the preacher's house, you know, due to concern,” said Meadows.

Watson told police he was beaten about a half dozen times across his face and forearm before Galloway ran back downstairs and out the basement door he had broken into.

A neighbor says he saw him run from a gate at Watson’s house to an alley next to her parents’ house with a dog nipping at his heels.

"Well, my daughter saw they guy walking with a weapon. She said that he went through the walkway of the apartments and was carrying a stick or something," said Meadows.

The police showed up right away as neighbors poked around for the stick used in the attack.

"And then I found the weapon in the alley -- it had blood on it," said Meadows.

Watson was taken to the hospital with cuts to his face and head, a broken bone near his eye and possibly a broken arm. He has since been released.

Galloway is at the South Central Regional Jail after being charged with burglary malicious wounding and fleeing. He's being held on $25,000 cash-only bond.
