GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- There have been two confirmed cases on MRSA connected to a high school football team in Gallia County.

Dr. Gerald Vallee tells WSAZ.com that one patient was a student at South Gallia High School, who is on the football team. The other patient was someone who has direct contact with the team.

Dr. Vallee says the cases popped up in early October and both patients have been treated.

They have had other possible cases and are continuing to have a presence in the school to make sure it is contained.

Dr. Vallee says they are trying to track down carriers of staph. He tells WSAZ.com that about 25 percent of the population are carriers and 2 to 3 percent of those carry MRSA.

According to Dr. Vallee, in the locker rooms, athletes need to make sure they are taking safety precautions to keep the infection from spreading. He suggests not sharing towels, bars of soap or clothing.
