LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- An Appalachian hospital in eastern Kentucky has settled a whistleblower lawsuit with the federal government alleging that it improperly billed Medicare for work done in a pain management clinic.
U.S. District Judge David Bunning on Thursday unsealed a lawsuit brought by Dr. Michael Fletcher on behalf of the United States government against Pikeville Medical Center. Also unsealed were orders making the settlement final and a motion by the United States intervening in Fletcher's case, which was filed July 2, 2009.
Fletcher accused the hospital of overbilling Medicare in the pain management, radiation oncology and medical oncology units of the hospital.
Details of the settlement were not immediately available Thursday. Spokesmen for the U.S. Attorney's Office and hospital, as well as Fletcher's attorney, did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
