Playing the Snow Game Again!

Fast Moving Clipper Snows This Week

Old Man Winter returned to the scene of the crime on Sunday night as chilling north breezes and a fresh coating of snow (the first in a week) graced our presence. The cold that followed on Monday (highs in the 30s) was sharp enough to preserve the snow on lawns on the shaded north side of buildings today.

Turns out this Sunday snow was the first in series of “clipper” snows set to pass through our region this week.

These “clippers” earned their nicknames after the great American clipper ships of the 1850s. Robert Fulton would indeed be proud that the fast clipper ships of the mid nineteenth century made their mark on modern meteorology.

When you think clipper, think fast moving snow that originates in the prairies of Canada and “flies” through our region in winter. Just a month ago these clippers were passing every day and were responsible for our region amassing a whopping 26 days of snow so far this year.

Last night’s 26th event proved rather mundane though it did leave behind a postcard setting with trees and grass sporting a shimmering new coat at dawn.

Late Monday night the next clipper is already snowing through Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. Its arrival near dawn Tuesday could pose some minor travel problems for the drive to work and school. Chances of a dusting along I-64 are good with that amount ratcheting up to an inch across Interior Southern Ohio and Central WV.

In fact one can envision a stronger “coating” of snow for Bob Evans highway (OH RT 35) and Appalachian highway (Ohio Route 50) travelers on Tuesday morning as well as WV Route 50 travelers.

Motorists are reminded even where just a dusting falls, roads could be slick at dawn when temperatures fall to near 25 degrees.

The next clipper in the pipeline is still in Alberta Canada on Monday night and will be passing through our region on Tuesday night-Wednesday morning. This one looks to take a bit more southerly bend and introduce the risk of an inch or two of snow on Wednesday morning.

Behind this Wednesday clipper, a harsh late season arctic air mass will take hold.

With more clippers in the pipeline into at least mid-March chances are good another snowier than normal period is ahead.
