CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- With all of the rain so far this spring, it's no surprise for you to find mushrooms all over the tri-state.
According to a news release from the West Virginia Poison Center, these may look like the mushrooms you enjoy on salads and purchase from the grocery story, but you cannot be sure they are safe to eat.
The Poison Center says symptoms of mushroom poisonings vary depending on the type of mushroom that was eaten. Some mushrooms may cause upset stomachs, vomiting and diarrhea. The more poisonous types of mushrooms may cause seizures, coma, hallucinations, and/or liver failure. Mushroom poisoning can be fatal.
They warn to keep an eye on children if they are playing in the yard, that if they find a mushroom, make sure they do not ingest it.
The West Virginia Poison Center (WVPC) advises against picking and eating any wild mushrooms. If you or someone you know has consumed a wild mushroom, the ingestion should be reported immediately to the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222.
