KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A murder on Charleston’s West Side left one man dead and a family in disbelief.

"Well, at first I didn't wholeheartedly believe it because, I guess, my heart didn't want me to believe it," said Rudolph Lee, the murder victim’s uncle.

John Allen Rogers Jr. was found shot to death on the railroad tracks near the corner of Wyoming and Madison Streets on Saturday morning.

He leaves behind a wife and two teenage kids.

"He was a young man just trying to make it," Lee said.

Now police, his uncle Rudolph Lee and the rest of Rogers' family are desperate for answers.

"I mean, it's just ... it's hard not knowing, you know," Lee said. "Especially the way he died. I would just really like to know what went on that somebody had to do something to him like that."

Lee says Rogers was jumped by three men in a van a few weeks ago, and he thinks they may have crossed paths again.

"Some animal. That's the only way to describe somebody, some heartless animal. You know, just as cold as a reptile," Lee said.

But in the end, Lee says no matter what happens, his nephew will not be coming back.

"I don't know, man, he just ... didn't deserve to die like that," Lee said.

Investigators say John Allen Rogers Jr., 36, of Charleston, was found dead on the railroad tracks about 8 a.m. near the corner of Wyoming and Madison Streets. They say he was shot multiple times.

Police say they got a call about 1 a.m. that shots were heard in that section of the West Side, but they did not find anything upon initial investigation. Rogers' body was only spotted after daylight broke.

A few hours later, police say two women had also been shot with pellets from a shotgun in that same area. They were not seriously injured and refused medical treatment.

Police say the two incidents were not related.

Investigators say Rogers may have previously lived in Rand but was currently staying in Charleston near relatives.
