HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Flags were lowered to half staff in Huntington Thursday to remember the sacrifices made by local police officers to keep us safe.

The annual Memorial Ceremony was held Thursday outside the Jean Dean Public Safety Building in Huntington.

Officers who attended the ceremony say it's important to let the families of fallen officers know that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

"Throughout the years officers have made the ultimate sacrifice to serve and protect the citizens of Huntington and the state of West Virginia and all across the country. So today is our day to remember them and our sacrifice, and show the families that even though they're no longer with us, they're still a part of our family," said Sgt. Brian Lucas with the Huntington Police Department.

The ceremony coincided with National Police Week. A ceremony honoring officers nationwide was held in Washington DC Wednesday. Several officers from our area attended that ceremony.
