ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (WSAZ) --Two people face charges after police in St. Albans say they took part in a neighborhood scheme.
Officers say Amy Dogan, 36, and Derek Harris, 28, both of St. Albans, worked together to con neighbors on Bowie Street.
They say the scheme involves one person distracting the homeowner at the front door while the other person sneaks into the backyard and steals items.
Ashley Tanner lives in the Bowie Apartments and says her family was targeted Wednesday.
"It really made me nervous that they were watching the residence, basically, and coming to the door to see if we were home," she said.
Tanner says her patio furniture, bicycle and several chairs were being stolen while the woman distracted her.
"She just made small talk and acted real sincere," Tanner said.
Tanner said her husband caught up with the culprits in time and was able to recover their goods and call police.
But she says their brush with crime has put the whole family on high alert.
"My daughter even said the other day, 'I don't want to go outside and play, mom...what if they take me next time?' " she said.
Police say Dogan and Harris were previously charged in connection with similar schemes.
