Policing Political Signs

NEW BOSTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- With campaign signs sprouting as quickly toward Election Day as fall mums, the question is how to deal with them.

In some communities, beauty helps determine a political sign’s life or death.

New Boston Village Administrator Steve Hamilton says he has better things to do than tear down signs, including business ads illegally posted on utility poles and public right of ways. Hamilton says it's about village beautification -- not clogging storm drains.

He says his phone has been ringing off the hook with complaints about New Boston's political sign ordinance. The village law says no political sign can be bigger than 4-by-4 feet or 2-by-8 feet and can not be placed on public or private property.

Hamilton says the complaints and removal requests are coming in almost daily.

New Boston’s ordinance says all political signs -- no matter what size -- have to be removed by seven days after the election. If not, it’s a $10 fine for each sign.
