Portsmouth Launches New Rental Inspection Program

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Landlords and rental property owners can expect a knock on the door from the Portsmouth Health Department in 2013.

This month kicks off the department's new rental inspection program.

"We've got more than 2,100 on the list, so far," says Portsmouth Health Commissioner Chris Smith. "These days, Portsmouth is roughly made up of 50 percent rental property. With bad wiring and so many people using portable, alternative heating sources, it's good to have an accurate assessment of local properties."

"The key is tenant safety," says Andrew Gedeon, who's the Director of Environmental Health. "It's really an informational campaign at this point, but we do have the power to condemn the property and issue citations of we find dangerous violations."

The rental inspections started on January 3, 2013. One property on Summit Street has already been condemned.

Anyone who may have questions about the rental inspection program can call the Portsmouth Health Department at 740-353-5153.
