UPDATE 7/26/12 @ 11:00 p.m.
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It wasn't quite "The Shawshank Redemption."
That's how a jail administrator described an attempted escape at the Western Regional Jail Tuesday.
Both inmates involved told WSAZ.com they were not trying to escape.
Most prisoners don't expect their cellmates to be model citizens, but Samuel Breedlove says his cellmate at Western Regional was especially strange.
"It just blows my mind,” Breedlove said. “I'm supposed to be here a couple months. All of a sudden I get put in cell with an idiot."
That cellmate, Joseph Gibson from Charleston, was part of a high profile case last year after he was charged with breaking into 79-year old Geraldine Gibson's home, tying her up, robbing, and beating her.
According to the criminal complaint, the two inmates tried to escape by ripping the toilet off their cell wall and use a pipe from it to chisel a hole in the wall that led to outside.
"He jumped up and down on the toilet, saying he was trying to break the toilet," Breedlove said.
Breedlove, who's only facing a few months of prison time for breaking and entering, says he had nothing to do with it.
"I had no motive,” he said. “It's stupid to do something that's going to cost you 1 to 15 years when you've only got a few months. It's stupid."
Gibson also says he wasn't trying to escape. He says he was just trying to cause trouble so he'd get moved back to a different section of the prison where he'd had interaction with a female inmate.
"I started talking a girl through a vent and stuff," he said.
Gibson says he was moved to a different cell because of behavior issues.
"I never actually plotted out an escape, nothing like that," Gibson said.
Gibson was already facing up to 90 years in jail.
Breedlove had just finished serving prison time in Ohio on separate charges last week.
Both men are awaiting a hearing on the attempted escape charges.
Geraldine Gibson died last July.
West Virginia State Police say they received a call Tuesday night about the attempted escape at the Western Regional Jail.
According to the criminal complaint, inmates Samuel Breedlove, 34, and Joseph Gibson, 19, attempted to escape by ripping the commode off the wall and then using it to chisel a hole in the block wall of their cell.
The cell suffered extensive damage in the attempted escape.
Both men have been charged with attempted escape and damaging public property.v
