MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- If you can't get to the market, folks in Meigs County believe it's great when the market comes to you.
Thanks to a shipment by the Southeast Ohio Regional Foodbank, tons of fresh vegetables were passed out Friday morning in front of Meigs Eastern Elementary School.
"We've got so many students, it's a great thing," school Principal Jody Howard said. "Not only are students helping running the giveaway, we've got so many students who are in need; this is terrific."
The Meigs Eastern Elementary School is hoping to start a backpack take home program. It would provide a backpack full of food for students to take home on the weekends.
"We definitely have the population base to take advantage of that," Howard said. "But it's been very difficult to get the funding to get that program off the ground."
This produce giveaway was community based, and there were no restrictions.
"All we wanted was to give the people of Meigs County an opportunity for some fresh produce," Howard said. "It's great to see this show of support."
