CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) --The Charleston Fire Department is striving to make sure your home is ready for fire season.

The fire department teamed up with Charleston police to pass out both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors Saturday for free.

It's all apart of the project Safe and Secure.

Firefighters say a detector should be placed in every bedroom and hallway in the home.

They also say batteries should be replaced a few times a year.

Residents also got the opportunity to talk to officials about home security and fire safety tips.

Anyone can stop by the Charleston Fire Department, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 4 pm to pick a detector up.
