UPDATE 7/18/14 @ 10 a.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP/WSAZ) - Changes will be made to a proposed list of animals that would be illegal to keep as pets in West Virginia.

The original list developed by the Wild and Dangerous Animal Board includes chimpanzees, crocodiles, giraffes, elephants, piranha, and several types of pythons. It also includes some types of birds, turtles, tetra fish and geckos.

The board decided Thursday to have a subcommittee work on a compromise.

The law passed this year clamps down on new animals brought into West Virginia.

Neighbors who already own creatures on the list can keep them if they get a board permit, pay a fee and not breed or replace the animals.

The board says it has received about 206 comments from the public so far. Members say most of the comments address specific concerns about animals on the list.

The public comment period runs through August 1.

The board says they will hold another meeting on July 30 to review public comments and the committee's recommendations. The list will then be amended and re-submitted. Members say the final list will have fewer species.
