Raceland Man Arrested in Connection with Graduation Night Thefts

RACELAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A man is now in jail charged with stealing from students during graduation ceremonies at Raceland High School Tuesday night.

Raceland Police say that during the ceremony, Doran O'Neal, 59, of Raceland, stole about $40 and an iPhone from three purses that were placed in a side room. Officers say the thefts were captured on surveillance video.

Officers went to O'Neal's home to talk with him and say that his 22-year-old son, Justin O'Neal, answered the door. According to investigators, he initially told officers that his father wasn't home before finally admitting that he was home.

Police arrested Doran O'Neal for burglary, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and receiving stolen property charges. His son, Justin, was also arrested on a charge of charge of hindering an investigation.

Investigators say the elder O’Neal used some of the money to buy pizza, beer and pop.

In an interview with WSAZ.com following his arrest, Doran O'Neal admitted to stealing from the graduates, saying he was diabetic and feeling ill and that he needed to eat.

"I was sick and I did a foolish thing," O'Neal said.

According to the police report, O’Neal said he was in the school to get a drink of water. After being asked to leave, police say he returned and went through the purses.

Police also say they found marijuana and drug paraphernalia at O’Neal’s home.

Both men are being held in Greenup County Detention Center.
