BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Folks in the Tri-State are abuzz about the president's plan for gun control.
In his speech Wednesday, the president mentioned needing support in places where there is a strong tradition of gun ownership.
Our region certainly falls into that category.
“People are not going to be as protected,” Brad Taylor, a manager at Borders Sporting Goods, said. “That's what it boils down to.”
Taylor says he's worried about what it means for the future of the business.
“We're in a situation we're not used to,” Taylor said. “And that is, guns are not readily available to us. We can't sell guns to criminals; our guns are going to law abiding citizens. And when we can't get guns to law abiding citizens, there's a real problem.”
Chad Slater is a first-time gun owner. He's bought several in the last few months and went to Borders to buy a safe. He's frustrated by Obama's announcement and worries that in the future, he won't be able to get what he needs to keep his family safe.
“As a father and a husband, I want to take every means necessary to protect my family,” Slater said. “If that includes guns, so be it. Let's include the guns.”
Other folks we talked with say they think the president is on the right path. Rob Porter was relieved to hear about the universal background checks.
“If you don't have anything to hide, then there's no reason to not get a background check,” Porter said. “And you know, if it only catches one criminal ... It's worth the hassle that a thousand other people face.”
Danielle Murphy says she's happy about the ban on what the president calls assault rifles.
“I just think they're too dangerous,” Murphy said. “They're just too rapid firing, and that makes people who go on killing sprees -- like a lot easier for them to be able to do things like that.”
Everyone we spoke to agreed on this: making sure a tragedy like Newtown doesn't happen again.
“If we had protection to those kids like we do to our politicians and to celebrities, it would help so much,” Taylor said.
The question is, though, how to do that.
