UPDATE 10/24/12 @ 11:45 a.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Pinta and Nina are making an extended stay in Charleston thanks to Hurricane Sandy.

According to a press release, the ships will be docked at Haddad Riverfront Park through Sunday, and will depart Monday morning.

“Due to Hurricane Sandy, hundreds of school children had to cancel their field trip to the ships this week, so we have extended our visit so that they will have an opportunity to reschedule, in addition, on Tuesday morning, the ships had 4 inches of snow on the decks making it impossible for the general public to visit," said Captain Morgan Sanger.

While in port, the public is invited to tour the ships. Admission prices are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for students ages 5 to 16. Children 4 and under can enter for free.

The Nina replica was built by hand without the use of power tools. The Pinta replica was built recently in Brazil and is larger than the original.

The Pinta and the Nina were part of Columbus' fleet when he sailed to the West Indies in 1492.
