UPDATE: Teens Rescued from Flooded Floodwall Pumping Station

UPDATE 6/13/14 @ 12 p.m.
CEREDO, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two teens are very lucky after falling into about 10 feet of water at the bottom of a floodwall pumping station.

The incident happened in Ceredo late Thursday night. It took rescue crews about an hour to get the male and female out.

People stood by in awe, as crews worked to get to the two teens.

"I went up there and there was a bunch of people just gathered around and all the police, EMT people, firefighters, trying to get the girl out," said Kylie Perdue.

Ceredo Fire Chief David Caudill tells WSAZ.com, the pair fell about 30 feet and were holding onto a pipe to keep from going under.

"It's a long fall down to the bottom," Caudill said.

Caudill said there was a ladder that goes down into concrete cylinder, but it is difficult to use and some of the ladder rungs had rusted off.

Caudill also said he is not sure how the teens got down there, but that a grate had been removed that is generally locked.

Rescuers used a harness with a rope to climb down to help the teens. They then tied the harness to the girl and raised her up.The procedure was then repeated with the boy.

Both were taken to hospital where they were treated and released. Besides being soaking wet, Caudill says it appeared the girl had an ankle injury.

“The next time somebody may not be quite as lucky," Caudill said.

Ceredo city workers on Friday installed a new gate to block access.

Caudill says the teens appeared to be 16 or 17. No names were released.

Ceredo Police tell WSAZ.com that charges are pending.
