PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Jacqueline Bryant lives just off the beaten path outside Hurricane on a gravel road with a gravel driveway.

Recently, an orange van pulled up to her house and the man asked if she wanted her driveway paved. But her husband said no and the van went on down the road.

"But, I mean, I'm smart enough that I'm not going to give anybody money up front until the job's done," said Bryant.

It’s a good thing she didn’t accept the offer to pave her driveway because law enforcement says this time of year is ripe for construction scammers all across the state.

"We assume that they're going to do the job that we pay them to do but there are many people out there that are just thieves," Capt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department said.

So to keep yourself safe, law enforcement says to call the attorney general’s office to do a background check on the company that’s offering work.

"They can also ask for references -- and not only phone numbers but addresses so they can go make a personal inspection of some of this construction company's work," Capt. Crosier said.

But Bryant isn’t taking any chances.

"I know a woman that got took for a lot of money one time, an 80-year old woman. She was in her 80's and she got took not only one time, she got took twice -- so, it's something that can happen to anybody, I guess," Bryant said.
