GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Young people causing shenanigans and tomfoolery is nothing new.
However, fast forward to today when social media is added to the mix, and as management at the Courtside Bar & Grill found out -- it’s a whole new animal.
"The rumors got completely out of hand on social media," a spokesman from the restaurant said. "And what should have been a fairly simple thing got blown completely out of proportion."
The restaurant in Gallipolis had some issues with what some would call unruly teenage punks.
The spokesman for Courtside says the kids would mock their waitresses, leave them nasty notes with profanity and 13-cent tips.
The teens also refused to budge from their tables, forcing other customers to wait in line for long extended periods.
"It just makes other good kids like us look bad," a 17-year-old customer said.
The restaurant recently implemented some new rules, including people under 18 having to pay before they get their food, with a built-in 15 percent gratuity.
“Unfortunately, the serious problems we were seeing with those who chose to act up were escalating at an alarming pace,” the restaurant spokesman, who didn’t want his name used, said. “When these behaviors began to negatively affect our adult customers and our employees, as much as we hated to do it, we felt drastic measures were necessary just to get the problem under control.”
The Courtside spokesman says rumors on social media swirled that everyone at the restaurant would be forced to pay the gratuity, but the real rules seem to have support from customers of all ages.
"If they don't like it, they don't have to come in," customer Sharon Tackett said.
Those under 18 are also no longer permitted in the bar section of the restaurant.
The Courtside spokesman says since the new rules went into effect, they haven’t had any more of those problems.
