ROANE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) --Fire officials say flames that destroyed a home in Robertson Ridge Saturday night were no accident, and caused one firefighter to suffer from heat stress.

The flames broke out in empty home atop the hill just before 11 p.m. Frame Fire Chief Ron Russell says he and two other men rushed to the scene and fought the flames without help for 30 minutes.

"It's aggravating because you come out here trying to save people's property and find out that the fire was intentionally set," he said.

The lack of initial manpower put a strain on the firefighters and caused one to show heat stress symptoms, according to Russell. That firefighter quickly recovered.

Additional help from the Walton and Pinch Volunteer Fire Departments came later after a communication issue was resolved, according to officials.

Russell says about seven fires have broken out on that particular hill in the past ten years.

"We're putting our firefighters at risk to come out and save property that somebody doesn't have any regard for," he said.

Officials say there was evidence that an accelerant was used in the house to make the flames spread faster.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is now handling the investigation.
