Roane County Schools See Drop in Attendance Rates During Flu Season

ROANE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Roane County School District officials say they're seeing a large drop in student attendance rates at the height of flu season.
Attendance was measured at a near-record high in the beginning of December and then plummeted shortly after, according to Stephen Goffreda, Director of Student Services and Attendance.
Goffreda says the trend began shortly after the shooting tragedy in Newtown, Conn. took place. It continued into January as the flu and norovirus became prevalent.
This is the largest drop in attendance rates the district has seen since the swine flu scare in 2009, according to Goffreda.
