SUV Catches Fire Along I-64 East

Updated: Sun 4:15 PM, Oct 07, 2012

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A car engulfed by flames and smoke kept firefighters busy and stalled traffic for miles.

The SUV caught fire about 2:30 Sunday along I-64 East between the 29th Street and Barboursville exits.

Firefighters tell WSAZ.com when they arrived flames were shooting through the hood of the SUV.

First responders say one woman was inside and able to get out. It's still unclear what caused the vehicle to catch fire.

The Barboursville and Milton fire departments doused the engine with water and contained the flames.

The interstate was shut down for nearly an hour, causing a major backup. It has since reopened and traffic is moving smoothly.

Firefighters are investigating an exact cause of the fire. The woman was transported by firefighters to a nearby gas station where she was picked up by a friend.
