School Board Members, Parents Discuss Year-Round School Idea

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Merging two schools may also bring another change for parents and students in Charleston.

The new Edgewood Elementary School is set to open in 2014, and there is talk of making it a year-round school. The new building will combine the existing J.E. Robins and Watts Elementary Schools.

"I really think that kids benefit from continuing their education through the summer and not having three months to lose and forget everything," parent Brandi Clement said.

But some school board members aren't convinced.

"No one has shown me that year-round school is getting better results than regular schedule," School Board President Pete Thaw said.

Amy Weddell has kids at Watts and says she wouldn't mind sending them to school in the summer -- as long as it's consistent throughout the school system.

"If they just make a certain [school] here and there year-round, then we wouldn't have time for vacations or anything like that," she said.

Thaw says nothing is set in stone, and that he'll listen to the community's voice.

"I will support whatever the parents decide," he said. "You show me a vote from the parents of J.E. Robins and Watts, and I'll go with it."

Board members say they plan to hold a vote sometime in the future.

Piedmont Elementary and West SIde Elementary are currently year-round schools in Kanawha County.
