School Making Changes for Safety Concerns

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Following the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, many parents have been thinking about how vulnerable their kids are.

Tuesday night parents and staff at Fallsburg Elementary got together to talk about how to make their school safer.

"With everything happening, you have to go further," parent Peggy Moore said.

"Times are different,” Principal Jamie Lester said. “They are times we have to adapt to."

One of parents' concerns was the front doors of the school are left unlocked during the school day.

“It could hit here very easily,” parent Kevin Huff said. “Somebody could have been watching the school and see how easy it is to get in."

Staff listened to that concern, and starting Wednesday, those doors will be locked during the school day.

Lester says the school district is planning to install security cameras and buzzer systems in all schools in the county.

"We have to ensure to the extent possible they are kept safe during the school day," Lester said.

In the next couple weeks Fallsburg will also be implementing a new child pickup system where parents or guardians will be required to have an ID card provided by the school.
