School for Autistic Children Opening in Ashland
ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) - A new school that is dedicated to autistic children will open this fall in Ashland.
The I Believe I Can Learn school will be operated by the nonprofit I Believe Foundation inside the Debord Terrace Community Center in Ashland.
Co-founder Mandy Kidwell says enrollment during the first year will be limited to six students ages 5-10. She says applications are being accepted from surrounding areas and students are screened and tested as part of the admissions process.
Licensed occupation therapist Jackie Martin will serve as director at the school, which will operate on the same calendar as the Ashland Independent School System.
Kidwell says the school is needed because the number of autistic children in the area has been growing in recent years.
