GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A state park is hoping to add some new excitement and bring in economic development, but some park regulars are worried the additions will ultimately take away from them.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources hosted a public meeting at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park Thursday night discussing a proposal to allow scuba-diving in a 10-acre section of the 181-acre lake.
The problem is those ten acres are a fishing favorite.
"Where they're wanting to close it down is where you do most of your bank fishing," Brent Christian from Ashland said.
Scuba-divers would be allowed to use the area from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April through October. The lake is ideal for scuba-diving because of its clear water, park officials say.
They say the added activity could help attract more people and bring some much-needed money to the park.
"We need to raise more money to do more economic development to keep our people working," State Parks Deputy Commissioner Steve Brooks said.
At Thursday night’s meeting they held an informal vote for the attendees to get a general consensus how people felt. 27 people voted in favor of adding scuba-diving, and five voted against it.
The park still has to get exemption from a rule that prohibits state parks from allowing commercial scuba-diving. They're hoping to have the exemption approved by the end of this year's legislative session.
Brooks says they’re also looking at adding zip-lining to the park.
