SHERIFF: Hunter Found Dead in Meigs County Died in ATV Accident

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Meigs County Sheriff Robert Beegle tells WSAZ.com that a hunter who was found dead Wednesday evening died in a 4-wheeler accident.

Leonard Wells' wife reported him missing after she hadn't heard from him in several days. The couple is from Charleston and she said he went to Meigs County Saturday for a hunting trip.

The Sheriff's Office sent a crew out to search for Wells on Wednesday, and found his body near the intersection of Buckwheat Road and Buzzard Den Road. That's near the Meigs-Vinton line.

Sheriff Beegle tells WSAZ.com that Wells died in an ATV accident and that the equipment rolled over on him.

Sheriff Beegle says Wells had not taken his medicine Sunday through Wednesday, so they believe the accident happened on Saturday.

Wells was 64-years-old.

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Saddened neighbors shared their grief after a Charleston man who went on a hunting trip was found dead Wednesday in rural Meigs County.

The Meigs County Sheriff says Leonard Wells, 64, left his home in Charleston on Saturday to go hunting near the Meigs-Vinton county line but never returned.

Search crews found Wells' body in the Salem Township area.

Wells' neighbors were understandably shaken by his death.

"It's a tragedy for anybody to lose a family member like that," neighbor Ronald Rife said. "I feel sorry for his family, you know? I know the heartbreak they're going through."

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A missing hunter has been found dead in Meigs County, Ohio.

The Meigs County Sheriff says search crews found the body of Leonard Wells, 64, of Charleston, about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Buckwheat Road and Buzzard Den Road.

Wells left his home in Charleston Saturday to go camping in the Salem Township area, near the Meigs-Vinton County line.

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A search is underway for a missing hunter in Meigs County, Ohio.

Meigs County Sheriff Robert Beegle tells WSAZ.com Leonard Wells, 64, of Charleston, left his home Saturday to go hunting in the Salem Township area, near the Meigs-Vinton County line.

The Sheriff says Leonard's wife reported him missing after he did not return home Monday and was not answering his cell phone.

Search crews have located Leonard's campsite, but no sign of Leonard. His four-wheeler and hunting bow are also missing.

The Sheriff says Leonard has health conditions and it appears he hasn't taken his medication in a few days.

Crews are expected to search until about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Sheriff says the search will resume Thursday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Meigs County Sheriff's Department.
