UPDATE: Driver in Serious Condition After Accident on U.S. 52 in South Point

UPDATE 5/24/11 @2:42 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) --Robert Thompson, 29, of Ironton, Ohio, remains in serious condition in Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Thompson was hurt in a crash along U.S. 52 near South Point on Monday

The Ohio Highway Patrol says he drifted across the paved median and hit the trailer tires of a semi.

Thompson had to be airlifted to a Huntington hospital.

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man who was driving a car that hit a semi Monday is still in the hospital.

Robert Thompson, 29, of Ironton, Ohio, is in serious condition in Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Thompson was driving on US 52 Monday in South Point when Ohio Highway Patrol says he drifted across the paved median and hit the trailer tires of a semi. The accident happened at the intersection of Delta Lane.

The tractor-trailer driver was not hurt.

The accident happened around 12:45 p.m. The westbound lanes of US 52 were shut down for several hours.

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The driver of a car that collided with a tractor-trailer Monday afternoon near the intersection of U.S. 52 and Delta Lane has been identified.

Robert Thompson, 29, of Ironton, Ohio, was driving a silver Chevrolet Impala east when it drifted across the paved median and into the westbound lanes, according to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The car then struck the trailer tires of the westbound semi.

Thompson was taken by helicopter to Cabell Huntington Hospital.

The tractor-trailer was driven by Michael Lanning, 46, of Charlotte, N.C. Lanning was not injured.

The accident happened about 12:45 p.m. Despite earlier reports of six vehicles involved in the crash, the car and tractor-trailer were the only ones involved.

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A two-vehicle accident that shut down U.S. for about four hours has now been cleaned up.

Lawrence County dispatchers tell WSAZ.com that all lanes of U.S. 52 have reopened.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is currently investigating the accident.

The accident happened about 12:35 p.m. at the intersection of Delta Lane an U.S. 52 in South Point, Ohio.

One person had to be flown to a local hospital.

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A major accident is still causing problems on U.S. 52 in South Point, Ohio.

The westbound lanes of U.S. 52 are still shut down following an accident that happened about 12:45 Monday afternoon.

According to our crew on the scene, the back wheels of the semi were ripped off by one of the cars involved in the accident. One of the victims was flown by helicopter to a local hospital.

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A car and a tractor-trailer have been involved in an accident in South Point, Ohio.

911 Dispatchers in Lawrence County tell WSAZ.com the accident happened around 12:45 Monday afternoon.

It's at the intersection of U.S. 52 and Delta Lane.

Dispatchers say one person is being life flighted from the accident.

Both east and westbound lanes are currently shut down until the helicopter with the patient on board takes off. The eastbound lanes will reopen after that take off.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating.
