FIRST ON WSAZ.COM: Adults Accused of Child Neglect Comment on Charges

Updated: Tue 7:55 PM, Jul 24, 2012

UPDATE 7/24/12 @ 6:40 p.m.
CLOTHIER, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Drugs and poor living conditions are why West Virginia State Police say seven children are with Child Protective Services and two adults are in jail.

The two adults do admit to some of the charges, but are not taking responsibility for all of the accusations.

“I love my children. I want them home with me and they want to be home with me,” Kimberly Mounts, who is accused of child neglect, said.

Mounts and her boyfriend, Everrett “Allen” Spears were taking care of her three children and four of her sister's kids. That is until CPS and state police showed up at their door.

Troopers say they found drugs, needles and a marijuana pipe inside the home. Mounts says that's only half true.

“He (Spears) had paraphernalia in the house. As far as drugs go, there were no drugs,” Mounts said.

Spears admits to using drugs.

“It was the suboxone that I started doing to get off everything else, and it was just another dag-gone habit,” Spears said.

He says anything he had inside the house was locked away, but understands that's no excuse.

“I regret every bit of it; every bit of it,” Spears said. “I wish I had never done it to begin with. I regret every bit of it.”

According to the criminal complaint, the house has no running water. Mounts admits it was turned off last week, and says they were working to get it back on.

However, the focus now is on cleaning up the situation and getting their family back together.

“I love them just like they're mine,” Spears said.

“Every kid is happy. Every kid gets attention and loved the way a kid’s supposed to,” Mounts said.

The complaint also states that all seven children were sleeping on the floor of one room.

Mounts says they did fall asleep that way one night, but that usually the girls sleep in one room and the boys in another. She says both rooms have beds.

Both Mounts and Spears are facing seven counts of child neglect and possession of a controlled substance. They remain in the South Western Regional Jail.
