JACKSON COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A would-be homicide investigation took a very different turn today in Jackson County, Ohio.
Late Wednesday night, someone found a severed foot alongside the road.
“We thought at first that it could've been a body that had been uncovered,” Sheriff Tedd Frazier said.
A man walking along McCoy Road found what looked to be a foot. At first glance, just about everyone thought it was human.
“The fact that it had clean cuts and hadn't been broke,” Frazier said. “We thought it was a homicide case.”
The coroner was called out and took the foot to Columbus himself to be examined.
“After three anthropologists examined it-- it took three of them-- to determine it was a bear foot,” Frazier said.
Jim Oglesbee lives less than a mile from where the bear foot was found. He's not surprised.
“As far as the bears, you know... I've seen them... I just sit and watch them,” Oglesbee said.
In fact-- one year-- he watched three of them roaming around from inside his house.
Even though it was not a human foot, Sheriff Frazier says there still may be evidence of a crime.
He says here in Ohio there is no bear hunting season, which means if the bear was killed here, it was an illegal act.
ODNR is investigating.
