LAVALETTE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Hundreds of angry folks poured into the Lavalette Public Service District's meeting room on Wednesday. They were there to protest the proposed rake hike request from the Northern Wayne County Public Service District.
Officials with the district had asked for a 49.6% rate hike to fix problems with the existing sewer system. However, at Wednesday's hearing, PSD officials say they were only seeking a rate increase that would amount to about 25%. That 25% rate hike increase includes a 20% emergency rate hike that was passed in October.
According to a information sheet from the PSD, the money is needed because past leaders signed off on a unique sewer design that now has "significant operational problems."
One after another, angry customers spoke out at Wednesday's hearing. Many said their sewer bill continues to soar, and they weren't sure how they would pay for the increase.
A financial judge from the West Virginia Public Service Commission came to Wayne County for today's hearing. She will now have to decide whether to accept, deny or change the rate request.
