UPDATE 11/1/13 @ 10 p.m.
LEWIS COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A night with friends turned deadly for one woman after she was left in the road and hit by a car.

Lewis County Sheriff Johnny Bivens says about 11 p.m. Thursday, 36-year-old Heather Stone was taking a short walk with three friends from a neighbor's home to her house in Garrison.

During the walk, investigators believe a fight broke out between Stone and at least one of the friends.

"At this time we're trying to determine if it was a verbal altercation or a physical altercation," Bivens said.

Bivens says Stone was left on Route 1306 while the three others walked back to the house from where they'd just come.

Moments later, a car ran over her. She died later at a hospital in Columbus.

The sheriff says the whole group was drunk, probably too much so to even realize the danger they'd left Stone in.

"They were not thinking straight," Bivens said.

Merle Horsley lives next to the home where Stone had been living.

"Every weekend or every two or three days, they do this,” Horsley said. “They have left her beside the road before, and she would just get up and come on home."

One of the friends, Jesse Bertram, was arrested and charged with assault, the sheriff said.

Investigators say they'll learn more after the autopsy, and charges against the others are expected soon.

The man driving the car has cooperated fully and will not be charged, Bivens said.

Kathy Hartley was a friend of Stone’s. She says this loss is beyond senseless.

“Heather was a good person,” Hartley said. “Now she has a daughter that's going to grow up without a mom."
