MAN, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A one-sided relationship almost turned into fatal attraction Monday morning.

An elderly couple is recovering in the hospital after a brutal beating and shooting.

Relatives say it's all because of a 36-year-old man’s obsession with the couple's teenage granddaughter.

Family members say they've had problems with Shawn Belcher before. They say they are relieved that this attraction didn't take a deadly turn.

Dewey Rose was shot in the face and his wife, Gaynell, was beaten so badly that police found her unresponsive on her kitchen floor.

Belcher, a former substitute teacher, was arrested and charged with daytime burglary and attempted murder.

WSAZ spoke with one who man only wishes to be identified as a relative to the victims.

“We couldn't get her to talk, couldn't get her to move her hands, couldn't get her to move her feet, couldn't get her to move nothing,” the relative said about Gaynell. “It's over a 19-year-old girl that he thinks is in love with him.”

Family members say Belcher had been stalking the couple's 19-year-old granddaughter for months.

The house she grew up in is surrounded by no trespassing signs after Belcher was arrested in December for forcing his way onto their property and refusing to leave.

It was a similar situation that turned violent Monday morning.

“He was just back down here this morning with his bags packed because he knew that she was packing hers to go back to college today,” the relative said.

However, instead of going back to school, the Rose's granddaughter went with them to the hospital -- leaving everyone to question how Belcher could do this.

“He comes from a good family. They're great people; his mom and dad are,” the relative said.

The Rose's are still recovering. Deputies say their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

UPDATE 1/23/12 @ 3:40 p.m.
LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man from Logan County is facing charges after a shooting at a home near Man.

The alleged crime happened Monday on Lieber Lane in Claypool. That's near Man.

Logan County Sheriff's Deputies tell WSAZ.com Shawn Belcher, 36, of Logan County, was obsessed with a 19-year-old in Logan who lived behind his parents. On Monday, deputies say Belcher went to the victim's grandparents house and shot the victim's grandfather, Dewey Rose, in the face and then beat her grandmother, Gaynell.

The 19-year-old was at the home but was unharmed.

Dewey and Gaynell were taken to a local hospital. They're expected to be okay.

It's still not clear what led up to the shooting.

Deputies say this isn't the first time Belcher has been in trouble with the law. Investigators say Belcher was arrested back in December for trespassing and refusing to leave the victim's property.

According to a spokesperson with Logan County Schools, Belcher was a former substitute teacher in the county. However, he has not taught at any schools in Logan County this year.

Belcher is charged with attempted murder and daytime burglary. Deputies say more charges could be filed in the case.
