Power Back on for Businesses After Early Morning Attempted Robbery

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Some businesses on Charleston's East End once again have power after an early morning crash Friday caused a power outage that lasted hours.

Charleston Police tell WSAZ.com an attempted robbery may have been what caused the crash.

The driver of a car told police he picked up a friend from a bar on Charleston's West Side when two others also got in the car.

Shortly after, one of the passenger put a gun to the victim's head .

"There was no property stolen," said Sgt. Tony Hazelett of the Charleston Police Department, "according to the victim it happened so fast that once the gun was displayed he hit the gas of the vehicle and struck the telephone pole."

Police said after the crash the victim ran to CAMC General's Emergency Room where he was treated for minor injuries to his legs and arms.

The crash , which happened on the 1300-block of Smith Street, snapped a pole and caused power outages for some businesses along that road.

Pugh Furniture was among the businesses impacted.

"We're all just kind of twiddling our thumbs," Beth Pugh of Pugh Furniture jokingly said.

"It's been very dark and it's been hard to keep customers in and we've had to turn several of them away," Pugh added.

Power was restored early Friday afternoon for Pugh Furniture.

The relationship between the passengers and the drivers is being investigated.

At this time, police are searching for the other passengers in the car at the time of the crash.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A street on Charleston's East End is closed after a car crashed into a utility pole.

The accident happened in the 1300-block of Smith Street about 5 a.m. Friday.

Dispatchers tell WSAZ.com no one was around the car when police showed up and they are trying to find the driver.

Smith Street is expected to be closed until at least 11:30 a.m. Friday.
