UPDATE 8/30/12 .
JACKSON COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A young brother and sister from Wellston, Ohio are being honored Ohio State Fire Marshal and Coalton Fire Department Thursday night.
Jasey Carpenter, who is 11 years old, and her 8-year-old brother, Jason Carpenter, Jr., will receive the Smoke Detector On Guard (Smoke D.O.G.) Award.
“Much like a guard dog, a smoke detector stands watch over the home both day and night,.” said State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers
The State Fire Marshal says that on July 24 just after 2:33 a.m., Jasey woke to the sound of the smoke alarm in her home. She immediately woke her brother, mom and dad as smoke quickly banked down the ceiling and walls. Everyone, plus the family dog, was able to escape through Jasey’s bedroom window.
“Within another one to two minutes this family would not have escaped the smoke and hot gasses had it not been for the working smoke alarm,” said Coalton Fire chief John Frisby.
The fire caused extensive damage to the home.
The fire happened at a home in the 900-block of Hardscrapple Road in Wellston about 2:30 a.m.
The State Fire Marshal says the family’s 11-year-old daughter woke to the sound of the smoke alarm and immediately got her mom, dad and 8-year-old brother out of their beds. They, and the family dog, then escaped the fire through a bedroom window.
SFM investigators and firefighters believe that within another one to two minutes the family would not have escaped the smoke had a working smoke alarm not been in place.
“I know this was a frightening experience for this family, but I am proud of them for installing and maintaining a working smoke alarm and knowing what to do when that alarm sounded,” said State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers.
The home is a complete loss. Investigators say the fire started near an electrical outlet in the living room.
