ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Be wary if you get a call from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office saying you have delinquent parking tickets that need paid.
Sheriff Patrick Kelly says the caller ID comes up as the Sheriff’s office by it's not true.
Kelly says the caller is using an application called Spoof.
The Sheriff says a Spoof Card offers the ability to change what someone sees on their caller ID display when they receive a phone call. Spoof applications are available on a number of smart phones.
A concern with law enforcement is the applications can be used to extort money as used in scams, disrupt public services and fictitiously make death notifications or attempt to impede public perception using another party's phone number, according to Kelly.
If you have been a victim of this type call, please contact the Athens County Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement agency.
