HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Volunteers are the life blood of many local groups, including at St. Mary's Medical Center.
On Tuesday, the hospital showed its appreciation for the long hours volunteers put in each week.
Hospital officials said it would be hard to care for patients without the services provided by volunteers.
"It would be disastrous," said Pat Chambers, director of volunteer services at St. Mary's. "First of all, they are our greatest advocate in the community, they really are. Not only that, but they serve. They have hearts of a servant, and that's so important to us because they believe in the mission and values of the sisters, and they live it in their everyday lives."
It was the first of two events to honor volunteers at St. Mary's Medical Center.
